South India Coast to Coast: Easy Rider

Our South India Coast To Coast Easy Rider is the perfect balance for those who love to explore by two wheels at a relaxed and easy pace taking in bite sized chunks of south India giving plenty of time to soak in all that south India has to offer with the best of the sights and the scenery.

We cycle from the Bay of Bengal over the mighty mountains of the Western Ghats riding through the  South Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to the palm fringed beaches of the Arabian Sea riding. We pedal on idyllic back country roads, stopping overnight at places of special historical and scenic interest giving plenty of time to take in the temples, tea plantations, backwaters, historic cities and the unexplored gems that make our  C2C Easy Rider so unique.

Day 1: Arrive Chennai. Transfer to Mahabalipuram and the poolside restaurant at our hotel. Unwind, relax then join us on a short walk around Mahabalipuram’s world famous rock carved temples.

Day 2: Mahabalipuram-Pondicherry. 40km Cycle. A scenic drive along the stunning scenic coastal road and we visit Alhambra Fort on route to new Age Auroville. We ride a guided tour of Auroville before pedalling on the backroads  to French colonial colony of Pondicherry. Join the locals on the promenade for an evening stroll before dining in top Indo-French restaurant. 

Day 3: Pondicherry-Chidambaram. 30km Cycle. A morning walking tour of timeless Pondicherry.  We continue our journey south to the temple town of Chidambaram with a beautiful backcountry 40km ride through endless palm fringed paddy. Take a step back through the ages as we visit the temple complex at sunset and join the pilgrims in an unforgettable ancient ritual.

Day 4: Chidambaram-Swamilalai 40 km Cycle. We leave the coast and head inland onto the vast lush Tamil plains. Stunning rural scenery reveals a Tamil heartland almost unchanged over centuries  Bullock carts and cycles are more common than any other vehicles here. We ride on scenic backroads to our favourite overnight stop at stunning Swamilamalai. 

Day 5: Swamimaial-Thanjavur-Kannaduthan 35km Cycle. A relaxing morning then it’s a short drive to Thanjavur and the stunning Brihadeshwara Temple. We ride from Puddokottai on narrow lanes into the heart of the Chettinadu region and it’s wealth of abandoned mansions to Kannadukathan.

Day 6: Kannadukathan-Madurai. 30 km. We ride deeper in to the heart of Tamil Nadu with the lush landscape becoming more arid with rocks and ridges becoming a common sight. Idyllic rural riding brings us to perhaps the most famous of all of Tamil Nadu’s towns, Madurai and the unforgettable riot of colour that are the gopurams of Sri Menakshi temple. Evening guided stroll round the temple complex.

Day 7: Madurai-Munnar 30km. Landscapes change, the first signs of an undulating road and the mighty mountains of the Western Ghats beckon. We ride down through the Ghat’s through a lush carpet of tea into our overnight halt in the tea-capital of south-India Munnar.

Day 8: Munnar-Chinnar-Munnar 40km  A delight of a ride as we ride through stunning scenery under the shadow of south-India’s highest mountains down to China Wildlife Sanctuary and a jungle trek. Truly mesmerizing views.

Day 9: Munnar-Kumily. 35km We ride the forest road through cardamom and pepper plantations and ancient rain forests on an undulating road before reaching our destination at Kumily and the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

Day 10: Kumily-Kuttikanam. 30km Morning boat ride or jungle trek though Periyar National Park Beautiful valleys carpeted by tea before we reach our delightful plantation resort accommodation in Kuttikanam.

Day 11: Kuttikanam-Thaneermukkom 40km. Another cracking day in the saddle with the joys of a big descent down to the lush tropical Kerala plains. Colonial tea bungalows, and churches new and old are testimony to the areas unique strong Christian roots. Before reaching the shores of Vembanad lake and our overnight destination of Thaneermukam.

Day 12: Thaneermukam-Marwari Beach. 25km. A delightful short ride to one of Kerala’s hidden secrets; the near deserted tropical paradise beach of Marwari. Dive into the soothingly warm sea for a well deserved bathe. We make the short trip in the afternoon to our luxury houseboat and overnight cruise on Vembanad Lake.

Day 13: Fort Cochin: Breakfast on the boat then it’s a stunning coastal ride to historical Fort Cochin. Afternoon free to explore Fort Cochin.

Day 14:  Fort Cochin: Join us on our guided walk through the wealth of historical buildings and spice bazaars or take the chance to embark upon a bit of shopping. 

Day 15: Transfer to Cochin airport and your flight home/onward travel
